On March 3rd, PepsiCo debuted is sign on the Harbert Realty building.

This sign has caused quite a controversy in the Birmingham community. When you look out over the Birmingham skyline your eye is drawn to a HUGE blue vinyl sign with the Pepsi logo and the slogan “A Southern Original.” Many including myself want to see this go. It is sad really. Pepsi is a ‘Southern Original’ and we owe a lot to Buffalo Rock in regards to the development of this city. Mark Kelly, a publisher for Weld, explains in his article “Ugly as a Bowling Shoe” the irony of this company in the ‘Ham. Jimmy Lee Jr. was once the CEO of Buffalo Rock Bottling Company. He is described by Kelly as “one of the city’s most active civic leaders and biggest boosters, feisty and outspoken in his determination to see Birmingham become, in his phrase, “a big-league town.” An important, family-owned company is now getting a bad rap all because of this huge vinyl mistake.

I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon, but hopefully others don’t follow in it’s ugly footsteps.

Dear Birmingham. . .

admin-ajax.php

Welcome back to the magic of a little big city. . .

These words come to us from a prominent Birminghamian and poet, Sharrif Simmons.

These words ring true of something that is happening in The Magic City, a renaissance.

We’re undergoing a rebirth of innovation, creation, business, and so much more.

My job, or the one I’ve elected for myself, is to educate you on what is happening in the present and to remind you of how we got here.

I’ll do my best.

Lets do this.
